USGS description & history
Its first name was Lake Kampeska, and was named from an adjoining lake then changed to Vera and finally to Kampeska. The word Kam- peska is Sioux Indian and means "bright and shining like a shell or glass." (SD-T83/p. 89) Platted in 1883.
