USGS description & history
Originally named Clarksville about 1880 for an early settler. In 1885, the site was renamed Altoona for the town in Pennsylvania. The local railroad company later changed the name to Hitchcock, honoring Charles S Hitchcock, an early settler who owned land adjacent to the railroad station. (SD-T17/p70)
