The source behind the name
USGS GNIS Populated Place names in all 50 states and DC. Features in the historical extract or explicitly named historical are excluded; duplicate decision records with identical identities and coordinates are collapsed. GNIS points identify names, not legal or neighborhood boundaries, current occupancy, school attendance or a statistical population. Nearby Census places and tracts remain separately named geographies. Name completeness and currency vary; this is not a claim to include every locally used neighborhood name.

USGS description & history
Pioneer settler Joel J "Uncle Jack" Parish served as the first Postmaster for the community. He requested that the name of the town, at that time Puddleville, be changed. Adel comes from the name Philadelphia, after removing the first and last four letters. The name was changed on 22 July 1873 and the town was incorporated on 30 October 1889. (GA-T21/p1)
